2 questions about halo 3 ranks?

Well first of all I have an overall idea as to how it works but its still a lil confusing so i want an inside view instead of a description. By that I mean what comes to mind when u see a persons skill level,their rank and exp. Points.

do u think of them My second question is how am I doing. My skill level is 12 and rank is gunnery sargent. Am I on track, behind or ahead. I got that in two days. On a sunday and then a week later for day two (I have to go to a friends house to play live)

1.when i see that there is a real high level guy i really dont think much of him because he might not be that good he might just have no life and play a whole lot, also dont be to cocky when ur facin a low level because they might be really good so dont be to cocky, just play ur game. ur doin great for bein a level 12 in only two days so keep up the good work
